Agricultural and Horticultural Research Station, Ponnampet is situated in the midst of world heritage Western Ghats of Kodagu District which falls under Malnad (hilly) region with tropical climate and belongs to 9th Agro Climatic Zone. The important crops grown in the district are Coffee, Black Pepper, Arecanut, Paddy, Ginger and Maize. The research station was established in the year 1951 and it is tranfered to University of Agricultural Sciences, Mandya in the year 2025. It is located at a distance of 6 kms from Gonikoppal of Kodagu District and 96 kms from Mysore. The station is situated at 867 M above MSL with latitude of 12°29´ N and Longitude of 75°56´ E. The soil ranges from sandy loam to red loam with acidic pH ranging from 4.5 - 6.5. The total area of the station is 23.88 ha. wherein, cultivated area is 9.77 ha. The station receives an average rainfall of 2200 mm with an average of about 118 rainy days of which about 60-70% is received between June and August.
AHRS, Ponnampet is recognized as an international centre (hot spot) for screening rice germplasms against blast disease, because it has favourable weather conditions for development of the disease. The station has an active AICRP on Rice centre which started during 1965 for screening of leaf blast, neck blast and brown leaf spot. Every year thousands of rice accessions from across India are screened and identifying the elite germplasms which are used for future breeding programme against disease resistance. Apart from screening against diseases, breeding trials are also conducted under Initial Variety Trial and Advanced Variety Trials for different traits.
